UAE Joins UN's Final Session On Energy Transition Minerals In Kenya
Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, attended the United Nations' Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) Panel in Nairobi, Kenya. The event included government representatives, experts, and organisations discussing crucial mining sector issues since its inception in April 2024.
The UN CETM Panel has been a platform for exchanging views on developing global voluntary guiding principles for critical minerals. During the recent meeting, participants emphasised the need to establish stronger foundations and enhance international cooperation to achieve mutual benefits in the mining industry.

Balalaa praised the panel's outcomes, highlighting their alignment with the urgent need to maintain the 1.5°C target and global efforts towards net zero. He stressed the importance of sustainable policies and practices to protect local communities from environmental damage associated with mining.
He also underscored the significance of building broader confidence to achieve transformational outcomes. This would enable mineral-rich countries to foster an environment conducive to economic growth. Balalaa noted that attracting responsible investment in the mining sector is crucial for supporting these countries, enhancing their adaptability, and ensuring a smooth transition to renewable energy.
The UAE continues to demonstrate its commitment to climate action both domestically and internationally through participation in the UNSG’s CETM Panel, green investments, and global financial commitments. Reflecting this dedication, the UAE announced it will co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference with Senegal, following its successful hosting of COP28 in 2023.
