UAE's Role In Advancing Global Food Sustainability Highlighted By Dr. Amna Al Dahak

The UAE is committed to enhancing sustainable food security, guided by its leadership's vision. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, highlighted this commitment on World Food Day, 16th October. She emphasised the importance of global cooperation in addressing challenges facing agrifood systems to ensure a better food future for everyone.

Dr. Al Dahak pointed out that extreme weather, climate change, and economic shocks are increasingly pressuring food systems worldwide. These factors disrupt fragile supply chains, affecting everything from production to consumption. Consequently, around 673 million people globally are experiencing hunger due to these disruptions.

UAE Advances Global Food Sustainability Efforts

Food systems contribute significantly to environmental issues, accounting for about one-third of greenhouse gas emissions globally. The minister stressed the urgent need to address food loss and waste, which exacerbates these problems. Approximately 13.2 percent of food is lost between harvest and retail, while 19 percent is wasted in households and retail sectors worldwide.

The UAE is actively pursuing strategies to enhance local agriculture as part of its National Food Security Strategy 2051. Dr. Al Dahak mentioned that strategic investments in agritech and sustainable farming practices are transforming the agricultural landscape in the country. These efforts include promoting local food production and empowering farmers to strengthen domestic food supply chains.

Reducing food loss and waste can lead to more efficient land use and better water management, positively impacting climate and livelihoods. The UAE is tackling food waste through initiatives like ne’ma, aiming for collective support and participation to ensure success.

Global Collaboration for Sustainable Future

The minister reiterated that meeting the needs of a growing global population requires teamwork across borders, sectors, and generations. The UAE believes that collaboration is essential for transforming food systems into more efficient and sustainable models.

"On this World Food Day," Dr. Al Dahak stated, "the UAE reaffirms its dedication to transforming our food systems, ensuring nutritious food for all, and cultivating a sustainable and equitable future for generations to come, working hand in hand with the global community."
