How Did The UAE Expertly Navigate The Global Tech Outage That Occurred Last Week?
A global tech outage on Friday disrupted various services worldwide, reportedly due to a defect in a Microsoft Windows update, according to US-based technology firm Crowdstrike. The incident affected government services, flights, and airport operations. Many residents faced difficulties purchasing groceries or refuelling their vehicles as card machines failed, forcing stores to accept only cash. Companies also experienced disruptions as computers displayed the 'blue screen of death.'
In the UAE, authorities responded swiftly to mitigate the impact, allowing operations to resume quickly. Dr Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Chief Cybersecurity Officer, confirmed that the UAE managed the technical disruption efficiently and overcame the crisis promptly.

Strategic Partnership with Crowdstrike
The UAE's strategic partnership with Crowdstrike played a crucial role in maintaining business continuity during the outage. This collaboration enabled the country to confront and manage the disruption effectively. The chairman highlighted that all sectors recovered and returned to optimal functioning due to the strength and flexibility of the country's digital infrastructure and adherence to national cybersecurity standards.
Dr Al Kuwaiti explained that this partnership is part of a broader effort to build a sustainable cyber future. He noted that it is based on three main pillars of cybersecurity: people, technology, and processes.
Three Pillars of Cybersecurity
The first pillar focuses on people by spreading cybersecurity awareness through programmes like 'Cyber Pulse.' These initiatives aim to disseminate best practices and proactively address emerging threats. The second pillar involves leveraging advanced technological tools from Crowdstrike and the National Cyber Operations Centre. These tools help detect service disruptions and manage them using artificial intelligence technologies, in cooperation with various service providers and cloud computing companies.
The third pillar centres on processes, including standard operating procedures and operational concepts. The rapid flow of information from Crowdstrike facilitated clear governance in both public and private sectors. This governance ensured accurate information dissemination and prevented the spread of false or misleading information.
Dr Al Kuwaiti emphasised that these measures allowed for continuous monitoring across all sectors, ensuring business continuity despite the global tech outage. He added that cooperation with Crowdstrike is essential for spreading a culture of cybersecurity awareness among different segments of society.
Overall, the UAE's robust digital infrastructure and strategic partnerships enabled it to navigate this global crisis effectively. The swift response by authorities ensured minimal disruption to daily life and business operations in the country.
