UAE's Pioneering Efforts To Combat Plastic Pollution On National And Global Scales
The UAE is intensifying its efforts to combat plastic pollution both nationally and globally. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, highlighted this commitment on World Environment Day, observed annually on 5th June. She emphasised the UAE's dedication to environmental protection, inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's vision of a healthy environment as essential for a thriving society.
World Environment Day this year focuses on addressing plastic pollution, urging collective action. The UAE is responding with a comprehensive system for managing plastic products effectively. From 1st January 2026, a ban on importing, producing, and trading single-use plastics will be enforced. This follows the initial phase in 2024 when plastic bags were banned.

Dr. Al Dahak explained that the UAE's Circular Economy Policy is pivotal in this transformation. It optimises resource use in sectors like green infrastructure and transportation. The policy prioritises reducing plastic waste and encourages sustainable packaging and recycling solutions. Managing hazardous waste and cutting down plastic waste are also key commitments.
Dr. Al Dahak stressed individual responsibility in achieving the nation's vision by eliminating unnecessary plastics from daily life. "Each of us can play a leading role," she stated. "Let us become active agents of change, leading a powerful movement towards thriving communities, and a vibrant, resilient environment."
The Clean Rivers initiative by Erth Zayed Philanthropies addresses river pollution by empowering communities to create plastic-free waterways. This effort aligns with the UAE's global initiatives to reduce plastic waste through innovative solutions.
Dr. Al Dahak concluded with a call to focus on ecosystems that sustain life, highlighting this year's theme: Beat Plastic Pollution. "Together, we can build a brighter, greener future for all," she remarked. The UAE envisions thriving ecosystems on land and sea as part of its legacy for future generations.
The UAE remains committed to safeguarding its natural heritage through decisive actions against pollution and waste. By fostering community involvement and implementing strategic policies, the nation aims for a sustainable future where ecosystems flourish both on land and in water bodies.
