UAE's Digital Wellbeing Council Launches Initiative To Protect Teenagers Online And Promote Responsible Technology Use
The Digital Wellbeing Council, led by H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has introduced a new feature by Meta aimed at shielding teenagers from inappropriate content. This initiative, the first in the region, underscores the UAE's dedication to fostering a digitally empowered society that enhances life quality and aligns with leadership's vision for a secure digital culture.
During a youth circle event, H.H. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed and senior ministers such as Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri and Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi were present. The gathering included government officials, Meta representatives, youth, and social media influencers. The feature was launched on Instagram to detect and limit harmful content targeting teenagers.
The new feature employs algorithms to identify and restrict harmful content aimed at teenagers. It also provides tools for parents to monitor their children's digital activities, enhancing privacy settings and supporting psychological wellbeing. This initiative encourages responsible technology use while contributing to a secure digital environment for future generations.
A user guide was also introduced to assist parents in understanding this feature better and engaging in meaningful discussions with their children about online safety. This guide aims to empower parents with knowledge about digital safety practices.
A roundtable discussion was organised with council members, experts, and private sector representatives. The focus was on exploring opportunities for collaboration, updating digital safety frameworks, and aligning policies with future technological advancements. Discussions included improving Instagram’s policies and developing agile digital safety regulations.
The council also hosted a workshop involving teenagers, parents, and influencers to raise awareness about the new feature while promoting digital safety practices. This workshop aimed at educating participants on the importance of maintaining safe online environments.
Commitment to Global Leadership
H.H. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed highlighted that digital wellbeing in the UAE extends beyond infrastructure and smart services. It focuses on safeguarding future generations while promoting responsible engagement with technology. The goal is to ensure that the digital world remains a platform for growth, wellbeing, and global leadership.
The council's broader mandate involves tracking global and local digital trends while coordinating national initiatives. It reviews regulatory frameworks and collaborates with international partners to enhance digital wellbeing and community safety.
This initiative reflects the UAE's commitment to building a digitally empowered development model that aligns with its leadership's vision of fostering a safe and values-driven digital culture.
