Ramadan 2024: UAE Announces Reduced Working Hours For Private And Public Sectors
In a significant announcement, the UAE has introduced reduced work hours during the Holy Month of Ramadan, as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). This adjustment is set to decrease daily work hours by two, accommodating the spiritual and cultural observances of this period. Private sector entities are encouraged to adopt flexible or remote working schedules within these newly defined limits, aligning with their operational requirements.
Under normal circumstances, employees in the UAE's private sector are engaged for eight to nine hours each day. The Ramadan directive will see this duration curtailed, offering additional hours worked to be compensated as overtime. This move ensures that both fasting and non-fasting employees can partake in Ramadan's spiritual activities without compromising their professional commitments.
The reduced working hours are relevant for all private sector employees across the UAE. The Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), referencing the Hijri calendar, predicts Ramadan to begin on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. This scheduling change underscores the UAE's commitment to respecting religious practices while maintaining economic productivity.
For Federal employees, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has also outlined Ramadan working hours. Ministries and federal agencies are set to operate from 9 am to 2:30 pm from Monday to Thursday, with an early closure at 12 noon on Fridays. This schedule may be adjusted based on the specific demands of certain roles or responsibilities.
