UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Attends COP29 Climate Action Summit In Baku
President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended the opening of the COP29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit. He reaffirmed the UAE's dedication to advancing climate action and fostering a resilient economy for the future. The summit, inaugurated by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, is taking place in Baku from 11th to 22nd November under the theme ‘In Solidarity for a Green World.’
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed highlighted the UAE’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development principles. This dedication was evident when the UAE hosted COP28 last year, promoting international cooperation to effectively respond to the first Global Stocktake assessing progress towards the Paris Agreement goals.
His Highness emphasised that ongoing international collaboration on climate initiatives can usher in an era of sustainable economic and social growth benefiting all nations. He described climate action as an opportunity for progress rather than a burden. The historic UAE Consensus at COP28 demonstrated a shared global commitment to achieving a systematic, responsible transition within the energy sector.
The agreement also outlined a roadmap for fulfilling the Paris Agreement ambitions and restored trust in multilateral systems through commitments to financial pledges and efforts to mobilise climate funding for vulnerable nations and communities. His Highness urged all parties to prioritise mutual understanding over division, stressing that collective efforts are essential for humanity's greater good.
Upon arriving at the COP29 venue, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed was welcomed by President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He engaged in discussions with several delegation heads about bilateral relations between the UAE and their countries, highlighting COP29's role in enhancing international cooperation and accelerating global climate change efforts.
The UAE delegation accompanying His Highness participated in the opening session of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit. His Highness called on all parties involved to work together constructively, underscoring that this collaboration is crucial for achieving shared climate goals.
The summit serves as a platform for leaders worldwide to discuss strategies and actions needed to address climate change effectively. It aims to foster unity among nations in tackling environmental challenges while promoting sustainable development practices globally.
