Suhail Star Marks Transition To Cooler Weather In UAE

The UAE's summer is infamous for its intense heat and humidity. However, relief is on the horizon with the Suhail star expected to be visible in the next two weeks. Astronomers anticipate that Suhail, a star in the Vela constellation, will be seen from August 22 to 24. This event marks the beginning of a transition towards cooler weather in the UAE.

Suhail Star Signals UAE Weather Shift

Seasonal Temperatures

Between 1991 and 2020, September temperatures ranged from 29°C to 39°C, with an average humidity of about 54%. October sees a noticeable drop, with temperatures averaging between 25.5°C and 35.8°C. Winter starts in November, with January being the coolest month, averaging between 15.5°C and 24.3°C.

Despite Suhail's significance, immediate changes won't occur. September will still be hot and humid before temperatures gradually decrease.

Where Can You See Suhail?

Khadijah Ahmad from the Dubai Astronomy Group mentioned that Suhail will be visible at dawn from August 22 to August 24. As one of the brightest stars, it can be seen with the naked eye in areas with minimal light pollution.

Ideal viewing spots include desert regions and elevated areas like Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah or Liwa. The star will remain visible for up to eight months, slowly fading as winter transitions into spring.

Where Is Suhail?

Suhail is only outshone by Sirius in the UAE night sky. Known as the Star of Yemen, its appearance aligns with the ancient Al Drour calendar, dividing the year into distinct phases of 100 days each. It is located approximately 545 light years away.

The period following Suhail's sighting is associated with seasonal rains in mountainous areas. This time is also significant for planting new date palms, fishing, pearl diving, and various cultural practices reflecting natural weather shifts.

Stargazers can look forward to viewing Suhail later this month along with other celestial events like the Quadrantids meteor shower observed by the Dubai Astronomy Group in January.

The rising of Suhail symbolises a shift towards cooler conditions after peak summer heat. While immediate relief isn't expected, it heralds a gradual transition into more comfortable weather patterns for residents of the UAE.
