UAE Participates In EU’s Third Humanitarian Meeting To Address Sudan Crisis

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently took part in the European Union’s third Humanitarian Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) on Sudan, held in Brussels. This high-level gathering brought together major humanitarian donors and stakeholders from EU Member States, international organisations, and key partner countries. The focus was on addressing Sudan's ongoing humanitarian crisis through collective response efforts.

Ensuring aid reaches the most vulnerable, such as the sick, children, elderly, and women, is a top priority for the UAE. Discussions at the meeting emphasised supporting local responders through capacity-building and fair risk-sharing to achieve key humanitarian goals. The UAE remains committed to providing humanitarian assistance and supporting diplomatic efforts to mitigate the ongoing conflict.

UAE Joins EU Meeting on Sudan Aid Efforts

Rashed Al Hemeiri, Director of Development and International Cooperation Department, led the UAE delegation. Al Hemeiri reiterated the UAE’s commitment to scaling up its humanitarian efforts to ensure life-saving assistance reaches those in need. Since its founding, humanitarian aid has been central to the UAE’s policy, with a focus on protecting civilians.

The UAE has provided $3.5 billion in aid to Sudan since 2014. This support addresses urgent needs while aiding long-term recovery and development. Following the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in 2023, the UAE pledged over $600 million in aid. This includes $200 million announced at February 2025's High-Level Humanitarian Conference for Sudan.

The UAE continues leading global efforts to alleviate suffering by inaugurating a field hospital in Medhool, South Sudan. This follows successful establishments of two hospitals in Amdjarass and Abéché, Chad, which have treated nearly 90,000 patients. These initiatives highlight the UAE’s commitment to humanitarian solidarity and sustainable development across regions.

Productive discussions during the meeting marked progress in multilateral cooperation among humanitarian actors and donors responding to Sudan's crisis. Participants focused on addressing security risks and logistical challenges through better coordination among UN agencies, NGOs, and local actors for timely aid delivery.

The UAE remains resolute regarding its position on Sudan's crisis since April 2023. The country prioritises addressing catastrophic situations by focusing on civilians' needs. The discussions also underscored effective coordination among UN agencies, NGOs, and local actors for timely aid delivery aligned with international humanitarian law.

"The productive discussions marked a significant step forward in multilateral cooperation," said one participant at the meeting. The dialogue between humanitarian actors aimed at ensuring unhindered access to affected areas aligns with international humanitarian law principles.
