UAE Engages In 27th Gas Exporting Countries Forum Meeting To Discuss Energy Security
The United Arab Emirates, through the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), took part in the 27th Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, Qatar. This gathering included energy ministers from member nations and observer countries. They discussed global gas market trends and explored cooperation to ensure energy security and sustainability during the shift to a low-carbon economy.
Ahmed Al Kaabi, Assistant Under-Secretary for Electricity, Water, and Future Energy Sector at MoEI, emphasised the crucial role of natural gas. He stated, "Natural gas plays, and will continue to play, an indispensable role. It is reliable, providing flexibility to balance renewables, low-carbon, emitting 50–60% less CO₂ than coal and 25–30% less than oil, abundant, with strong reserves and infrastructure across our member states, and affordable, remaining among the most cost-effective fossil fuels."

Al Kaabi highlighted the UAE's dedication to significant projects like Hail & Ghasha and Ruwais LNG. The Hail & Ghasha development aims to be the first net-zero gas project globally, producing 1.5 BSCFD. The Ruwais LNG project will double the UAE’s LNG capacity to 15 million tons annually. These initiatives reflect the UAE's commitment to delivering reliable, lower-carbon gas while leading in climate-conscious solutions.
He further explained that natural gas is essential as the world undergoes an intricate energy transition. It is not merely a bridge but a foundation for reliability, affordability, and reduced emissions. Al Kaabi stressed that GECF should remain a platform for cooperation, dialogue, and innovation to ensure natural gas contributes fully to a secure and sustainable global energy future.
Natural gas is seen as vital in balancing renewable energy sources due to its reliability and lower carbon emissions compared to coal and oil. It emits 50–60% less CO₂ than coal and 25–30% less than oil. Its abundance and strong reserves make it one of the most cost-effective fossil fuels available today.
As countries navigate the transition to cleaner energy sources, natural gas offers a stable foundation. It supports energy security while reducing carbon footprints. The UAE's involvement in projects like Hail & Ghasha and Ruwais LNG underscores its commitment to these goals.
In summary, the UAE's participation in the GECF meeting highlights its dedication to advancing natural gas as a key component of a sustainable energy future. By focusing on innovative projects and international cooperation, the UAE aims to contribute significantly to global energy security and sustainability.
