UAE Delegation Engages In First G20 Sherpa Meeting In Johannesburg With Key Focus On 2025 Priorities
A UAE delegation, led by Mahash Saeed Al Hameli, the UAE Ambassador to South Africa and the UAE Sous Sherpa to the G20, attended the inaugural G20 Sherpa Meeting in Johannesburg. This meeting is significant as it marks the first time an African nation will preside over the G20, with South Africa taking on this role in 2025. The African Union's recent inclusion as a permanent G20 member further highlights its importance.
Ronald Lamola, South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, opened the meeting with a speech outlining plans for South Africa’s 2025 G20 presidency. The agenda includes inclusive economic growth, industrialisation, employment and inequality, food security, and AI. To address these priorities, three task forces, an initiative, and a commission will be set up.

Al Hameli emphasised the UAE’s dedication to contributing positively to the G20's objectives. He highlighted the priorities established by South Africa's presidency and expressed gratitude for being invited to participate in 2025. Al Hameli also praised Brazil for successfully hosting the 2024 G20 summit.
The UAE has been invited as a guest country for the 2025 G20 under the theme ‘Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability’. This marks their sixth participation in the G20 process and fourth consecutive invitation. The UAE previously participated in Brazil (2024), India (2023), Indonesia (2022), Saudi Arabia (2020), and France (2011).
A meeting of G20 Finance and Central Bank Deputies took place on 11 December 2024 in Johannesburg. Ibrahim Al Zaabi from the Central Bank of the UAE led their delegation at this event. The UAE’s involvement underscores its growing influence internationally and commitment to multilateral cooperation.
The UAE’s repeated participation in G20 meetings reflects its evolving global role. Joining BRICS in 2024 further demonstrates this commitment to multilateralism and collaboration with international organisations. The UAE aims to support peace and development while promoting well-being and prosperity worldwide through joint efforts.
