UAE Engages Actively In First China-GCC Forum On Peaceful Use Of Nuclear Technology

The UAE has reinforced its dedication to peaceful nuclear energy and international cooperation by actively participating in the First China-GCC Forum on the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Technology in Chengdu. The event, themed "Atoms for a Better Home," gathers senior officials, regulators, and energy experts from China and the GCC to promote strategic collaboration in nuclear science and technology.

During the forum, Rashid Al Falahi, Government Affairs and International Cooperation Manager at the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), delivered the UAE's national statement. He emphasised the country's enduring strategic partnership with China, which is based on trust, shared values, and a mutual vision for innovation-driven development.

The UAE's collaboration with China in nuclear technology began in 2018 when FANR signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China's National Nuclear Safety Administration. This agreement established a foundation for ongoing cooperation in areas such as nuclear safety, emergency preparedness, and regulatory harmonisation.

The UAE delegation engaged in several high-level technical visits to key nuclear facilities in China during the forum. These included a cutting-edge fusion research centre, Chengdu Gaotong Isotope Company, and other significant sites. The delegation also visited the ACP100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) site — a testament to China's innovation in advanced nuclear technology — where discussions on potential cooperation took place.

The UAE remains committed to peaceful nuclear development as an essential tool for energy transition and global climate action. As the China-GCC Forum progresses, the UAE reiterated its intention to deepen cooperation with China and fellow GCC states across the nuclear value chain. This includes areas like policymaking, education, safety standards, and advanced technologies.

The UAE's robust regulatory and operational framework for nuclear energy has positioned it as a model for peaceful use of nuclear technology in the Arab world. The country continues to advocate for strategic partnerships that enhance its role in international climate initiatives.

Through these efforts, the UAE aims to strengthen its position as a leader in peaceful nuclear energy while contributing to global climate goals. By fostering international collaboration, it seeks to advance sustainable development through innovative nuclear solutions.
