UAE Attends 47th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting In Milan After Joining Treaty In December 2024
The United Arab Emirates recently marked its debut at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) in Milan, Italy. This participation follows the UAE's accession to the Antarctic Treaty in December 2024. The UAE delegation was led by Abdulla Balalaa, Deputy Chair of the Emirates Polar Programme Steering Committee and Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability.
Balalaa expressed the importance of this event, stating, "We are delighted to join the 47th ATCM as a new non-consultative party. This milestone reflects our nation’s unwavering commitment to global cooperation and environmental stewardship. The UAE is dedicated to being proactive in preserving the cryosphere through science, innovation, and collaboration." His words underscore the UAE's dedication to international collaboration and environmental protection.

The ATCM is a key platform for international dialogue on Antarctic matters. It convenes annually, bringing together consultative and non-consultative parties to share information, explore mutual interests, and propose measures that further the Treaty's goals. This year’s session included over 400 delegations from 29 consultative parties, 28 non-consultative parties, along with observers and experts.
During the meeting, the UAE engaged actively in bilateral talks with other nations and stakeholders. These discussions focused on potential collaborations in polar research. Informal dialogues were also held to explore joint efforts in advancing scientific understanding and environmental protection in Antarctica.
The ATCM serves as a central forum for coordinating efforts related to Antarctic governance. It facilitates cooperation among parties to enhance environmental protection and promote peaceful scientific collaboration. This year’s discussions covered themes such as environmental preservation, scientific partnerships, operational safety, and responsible tourism.
Future Engagements in Antarctic Governance
The UAE’s involvement highlights its expanding role in global environmental diplomacy. It demonstrates a commitment to multilateral processes aimed at protecting fragile ecosystems. The country plans to continue its engagement within the Antarctic Treaty System by signing the Environmental Protocol. This key instrument aims to safeguard Antarctica’s ecosystems and encourage responsible use.
Through national initiatives like the Emirates Polar Programme, the UAE remains committed to scientific progress and multilateral cooperation. These efforts reinforce its position as a constructive actor addressing global environmental challenges. Looking forward, these initiatives will help preserve Antarctica for future generations while promoting sustainable practices globally.
