UAE Parliamentary Delegation Participates In Islamic Group Meeting To Support Palestinian Cause
Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), along with a UAE parliamentary delegation, attended the Coordinating Meeting of the Islamic Group. This meeting involved parliaments from the Union of Councils of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUIC) and took place during the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Switzerland.
During his opening speech, Saqr Ghobash conveyed heartfelt solidarity from the UAE's leadership and citizens to both Palestinian and Lebanese people. He offered condolences to families affected by recent tragedies. He emphasised that the Palestinian issue is central to Arab identity and cannot be ignored in any peaceful political settlement or international dialogue.
Ghobash stressed that Palestinians have a right to establish an independent state based on 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He urged member parliaments of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to unite in supporting this cause across international forums. He called for reaffirming Palestinian rights according to international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
In addition, he highlighted the need for collective efforts to end Lebanon's ongoing conflict. He advocated for implementing United Nations Resolution 1701 to ensure Lebanon's stability, security, and sovereignty. These actions are crucial for maintaining peace in Lebanon.
The Islamic Group meeting was chaired by Adama Biktogo, President of the 18th session of PUIC's Union of Councils. Participants reviewed topics on the agenda for both the 149th IPU Assembly and the 214th session of its Governing Council. The meeting included discussions on urgent matters presented by Palestinian and Algerian parliaments concerning recent developments in Palestine.
The attendees agreed to coordinate their positions and adopt an urgent item supporting Palestine. This decision reflects a shared commitment among participating nations to address pressing issues affecting Palestinians.
Asian Group Meeting Participation
The UAE parliamentary delegation also took part in an Asian Group meeting. This gathering focused on discussing topics relevant to upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings. Delegates agreed on coordinating positions regarding several key issues, ensuring a unified approach within these international discussions.
The UAE's involvement in these meetings underscores its commitment to fostering cooperation among member states while addressing significant regional concerns such as those affecting Palestine and Lebanon.
