UAE-Oman Railway To Cut Carbon Emissions, Boosts Eco-Friendly Transport

The UAE-Oman railway project, a significant collaboration between 'Etihad Rail' and 'Oman Rail', along with Mubadala Investment Company, is set to revolutionize transportation and trade between the two nations. Mohammed bin Zahran Al Mahruqi, Deputy CEO of Hafeet Rail company, shared insights into the project's multifaceted benefits during the joint UAE-Omani Business Forum in Abu Dhabi.

Al Mahruqi emphasized the environmental advantages of the railway, highlighting its potential to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. By substituting the cargo capacity of 300 trucks, the train is expected to cut down 80 percent of the emissions typically generated by truck transport. This initiative not only supports environmental sustainability but also marks a leap towards cleaner, more efficient modes of freight and passenger transport.

Railway Project Cuts Emissions

The partnership agreement's signing signals the commencement of construction works, with a focus on leveraging national expertise. The involvement of Trojan Construction Group and Galfar Engineering and Contracting underlines a commitment to nurturing local talent and contractors. Additionally, Siemens and HIC Corporation have been tasked with implementing state-of-the-art control and communication systems based on the European Train Control System (Level 2), ensuring optimal safety and efficiency in operations.

The project is poised to serve multiple sectors within both countries, potentially giving rise to new industries previously hindered by logistical challenges. With a cargo capacity of up to 15,000 tonnes and accommodation for approximately 270 standard containers, freight trains will play a crucial role in boosting trade exchanges. Furthermore, passenger trains will offer a swift travel option, reaching speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and covering the distance between Sohar and Abu Dhabi in just 100 minutes.

Al Mahruqi's vision for the railway extends beyond economic gains; he foresees it fostering stronger bilateral relations between the UAE and Oman. The inclusion of a passenger sector capable of accommodating up to 400 passengers per train underscores the project's role in facilitating people-to-people connections alongside its economic objectives.

In summary, the UAE-Oman railway project stands as a testament to forward-thinking infrastructure development. Through enhancing trade, promoting environmental sustainability, and strengthening diplomatic ties, this venture is set to make a lasting impact on the region's landscape.
