UAE, Oman Collaborate On $3bn Hafeet Rail To Link Abu Dhabi And Sohar
The UAE and Oman are collaborating on a pivotal development in the region's transportation infrastructure with the Hafeet Rail project, a $3bn train network designed to connect Abu Dhabi to Sohar. Ahmed Al Musawa Al Hashemi, CEO of Hafeet Rail, announced the project's progression into the implementation phase, marking a significant step forward in regional connectivity and cooperation.
The initiative, revealed alongside the joint UAE-Oman Business Forum in Abu Dhabi, stands as a testament to the strengthened ties and collaborative spirit between the two Gulf countries. Al Hashemi underscored the economic and social advantages expected from the railway, which promises high safety, security, and environmental sustainability standards.
The railway's route from the Al Wathba area in the UAE to Sohar in Oman, traversing varied landscapes, signifies not just a physical connection but a bridge for tourism and closer relations between the people of these nations. This project, now rebranded as Hafeet Rail, previously known as "Oman and Etihad Rail Company," embodies the shared vision and effort of the UAE-Omani alliance, incorporating companies from both countries into a unified operational team.
Economic And Environmental Impact
At the forum, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the project's role in catalysing increased investment and trade exchange between the UAE and Oman. The railway, expected to alleviate car traffic and reduce the carbon footprint, aligns with the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) vision for regional interconnectivity through the Gulf Railway.
Al Mazrouei detailed the route's strategic importance in linking Sohar's port to Abu Dhabi, offering a more efficient and shorter travel alternative to existing pathways. With a focus on affordability, the project promises to make both freight and passenger transport more accessible, underscoring the commitment to achieving a cost-effective and rapid implementation timeline.
The Hafeet Rail project not only represents a significant infrastructural milestone but also a forward-looking endeavour that stands to dynamically shift the economic, social, and environmental landscape of the region. With an anticipatory eye on further reducing the final cost below the current $3bn estimate, the project's leadership is poised to set a swift, efficient precedent in railway construction and operation.
As the UAE and Oman embark on this ambitious journey, the Hafeet Rail project emerges as a critical link in fostering closer relations, enhancing economic prosperity, and promoting sustainable transport solutions across the Gulf region.
