UAE Strengthens Global Fight Against Money Laundering At EAG Turkmenistan Meeting

The Executive Office of Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing recently marked its presence at the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism (EAG) Meeting. This significant event took place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, from May 2-3, 2024, highlighting a collaborative effort to combat financial crimes on a global scale. The meeting was a joint initiative by the Financial Monitoring Service of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, the Eurasian Group Secretariat, and the International Training and Methodology Centre for Financial Monitoring of the Russian Federation. The primary objective was to gather support in terms of donations and technical assistance for Turkmenistan's Technical Assistance Plan.

Hamid Al Zaabi, the Director General of the UAE's Executive Office of Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing, expressed the UAE's dedication to sharing its wealth of knowledge and expertise with nations around the globe. This commitment is part of the UAE's broader strategy to enhance international cooperation by exchanging best practices and insights in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. Al Zaabi noted, "We are pleased to participate in this important meeting, during which we've succeeded in identifying the main areas of the Technical Assistance Plan for Turkmenistan. Over the coming weeks, we will conduct further studies on the types of support that can be provided." He emphasized the UAE's rich experience in developing effective strategies and action plans to counter these crimes.

Al Zaabi further highlighted the importance of sharing experiences and expertise as a cornerstone of strategic partnerships at regional and international levels. The UAE's active participation in various forums underscores its commitment to a steadfast approach against money laundering and terrorist financing risks. Following a comprehensive presentation on Turkmenistan's Technical Assistance Plan, which included an overview and specific needs for enhancing its effectiveness as per the 40 FATF Recommendations, participating national delegations pledged financial support.

This meeting not only served as a platform for discussing strategies and plans but also reinforced the UAE's role in leading efforts to strengthen global frameworks against financial crimes. By offering its technical expertise and engaging in meaningful collaborations, the UAE continues to contribute significantly to international security measures against money laundering and terrorism financing.
