UAE Nuclear Non-Proliferation Forum In Dubai Focuses On Global Challenges And Innovations
The UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has initiated the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Forum in Dubai. This event gathers over 80 experts from around the world to discuss nuclear non-proliferation and control systems for nuclear imports and exports. The three-day forum, themed "Harnessing Innovation in Nuclear Non-Proliferation," aims to share insights and expertise on these critical topics.
Throughout the forum, participants will explore various subjects, including global nuclear non-proliferation policies, export control regimes, and case studies from different countries. Discussions will also cover the use of artificial intelligence, enforcement strategies, national perspectives, and efforts in capacity building. Experts will present their experiences and methods for evaluating relevant systems, highlighting best practices.

FANR’s Director-General Christer Viktorsson emphasised the forum's significance as a platform for international dialogue on nuclear non-proliferation challenges. He stated, "The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Forum serves as an important platform where experts from various countries come together to discuss the current status and challenges facing global nuclear non-proliferation efforts to ensure all nuclear material are used solely for peaceful purposes."
The UAE is recognised as a model for new entrants into nuclear energy. It is the first country in three decades to construct four reactors simultaneously at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. The UAE has also become the first Arab nation to operate a nuclear power plant. Its energy programme is based on six principles outlined in its nuclear policy, which include operational transparency and high standards of safety.
In 2023, the UAE signed an Administrative Arrangement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This agreement launched its Safeguards Support Programme aimed at enhancing IAEA's safeguards' effectiveness. Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA's Director-General, acknowledged the UAE's contributions to strengthening international nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
The UAE’s commitment to international conventions is evident through its development of integrated safeguards systems that are praised globally. These efforts reflect its dedication to ensuring that all nuclear materials are used exclusively for peaceful purposes.
