The delegation included prominent figures such as Fatima Al Mazrouei, UAE Ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway, and was met with reciprocal representation from Olav Myklebust, Norway’s Ambassador to the UAE. The visit facilitated high-level discussions with Norwegian officials, focusing on mutual interests in sustainable development and environmental preservation.
During the visit, Balalaa engaged in pivotal talks with Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, Norway's Minister of Climate and Environment. The discussions revolved around the outcomes of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) and emphasized the critical role of international cooperation in achieving the objectives set forth by the historic ‘UAE Consensus’.
Further meetings were held with Maria Varteressian, State Secretary for Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, and Hans Olaf Ibrekk, Special Envoy for Climate and Security of Norway. These discussions delved into various aspects of renewable energy, highlighting the significance of scientific research in meeting international commitments. The dialogues also covered potential economic and trade partnerships between the two nations.
The UAE delegation's itinerary included a visit to the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, renowned for its specialization in research related to climate affairs, artificial intelligence (AI), and space engineering. Additionally, the delegation explored the Norwegian Polar Institute affiliated with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. This visit provided insights into Norway’s strategies for combating climate change at both poles, examining the impacts of emissions and reviewing the institute's research findings.
This diplomatic engagement between the UAE and Norway represents a proactive approach towards enhancing bilateral ties and collaborating on crucial issues such as sustainable energy and climate action. By sharing knowledge and resources, both countries aim to contribute significantly to global efforts in combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.
