UAE And Nigeria Explore Expanded Bilateral Cooperation And CEPA

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu agreed to deepen UAE–Nigeria cooperation across key sectors, highlighting plans to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) during the visit, which both sides view as a major step in their evolving economic relationship.

The two presidents discussed ways to expand joint work in trade, investment, development projects, and renewable energy, stressing that closer economic integration should serve shared interests, support national development priorities in both countries, and create wider opportunities for their peoples in the years ahead.

During the talks, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed reaffirmed that the UAE aims to build relations with countries, including Nigeria, on trust, mutual respect, and practical cooperation that promotes progress, long-term stability, and an improved future for coming generations across both nations.

His Highness also stressed that Nigeria holds an important place within the UAE’s broader economic and development-centred engagement with African states, viewing stronger ties with Abuja as part of a wider strategy to enhance trade corridors, investment flows, and collaborative development initiatives across the African continent.

The meeting occurred during His Excellency Tinubu’s working visit to the UAE, where Tinubu is participating in Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, a major international gathering focused on climate, clean energy, and sustainable development, bringing together governments, businesses, and institutions to discuss practical responses to global challenges.

Both leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern and highlighted Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week as a global forum for dialogue and cooperation that supports effective, sustainable solutions to shared challenges while helping accelerate development efforts aimed at building a better future for humanity.

They underlined that sustainability is a priority for both the UAE and Nigeria, and reaffirmed their commitment to expand cooperation in renewable energy and related fields, with the goal of supporting economic diversification, improving energy security, and advancing sustainable growth agendas in both countries.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed welcomed His Excellency Tinubu to the UAE and expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen bilateral ties, open new channels for cooperation, and contribute to tangible benefits for both nations through closer coordination in strategic sectors.

For his part, His Excellency Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to reinforcing cooperation with the UAE in alignment with each country’s development plans, stating that Abuja seeks partnerships that help achieve growth, stability, and prosperity for Nigerians while also supporting the aspirations of people in the UAE.

The meeting was attended by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs; Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Adviser to the UAE President; along with several ministers and senior officials from the UAE, reflecting the breadth of the relationship.
