UAE President Establishes National Anti-Narcotics Authority To Combat Drug Trafficking

The UAE has taken a significant step in its fight against narcotics with the establishment of the National Anti-Narcotics Authority. President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a federal decree-law for this purpose, appointing Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan as Chairman. This move aims to enhance national efforts to combat drugs and ensure community safety.

Replacing the General Department of Anti-Narcotics in the Ministry of Interior, this new entity is an independent federal body linked to the UAE Cabinet. Its primary responsibilities include developing policies and strategies to combat drug-related crimes. The Authority will also work with relevant bodies at both federal and local levels to dismantle smuggling networks.

UAE Launches National Anti-Narcotics Authority

A crucial task for the Authority is to tackle drug trafficking by identifying and breaking down smuggling operations. It will coordinate with security and judicial authorities to ensure offenders face justice under UAE laws. This aligns with the nation's strategic vision for community security.

The Authority will focus on creating public policies and legislation related to narcotics control. It aims to establish frameworks that align with international standards, addressing new challenges in drug-related crimes. These proposals will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval.

To prevent illegal drug movement across borders, the Authority collaborates with national entities. It monitors individuals, goods, and transport at entry points like land, sea, and air. This coordination helps detect and address potential threats swiftly.

Handling Chemical Precursors

The Authority also addresses substances used in drug manufacturing by proposing regulations for handling "chemical precursors." This involves developing licensing mechanisms, trading conditions, and customs procedures in collaboration with relevant entities. These measures aim to prevent misuse of chemicals in illegal activities.

To improve coordination between federal and local bodies, a centralised database will be established by the Authority. This database will be accessible to all entities involved in combating narcotics within the UAE. It will facilitate information exchange, enhance crisis response, and improve national strategies.

The creation of this Authority reflects the UAE's commitment to strengthening its anti-narcotics framework. By unifying efforts at various levels, it seeks to ensure a safer environment for its citizens while adhering to international best practices in combating drug-related issues.
