UAE Ministry Of Economy Takes Action Against 1,117 IP Rights Infringing Websites
The Ministry of Economy (MoEc) has recently disclosed the success of its new initiative in protecting intellectual property (IP) rights across digital platforms. This announcement was made during a press event at the Ministry's Dubai headquarters. Initiated during Ramadan this year, the strategy, developed in collaboration with the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), includes the 'InstaBlock' initiative, which is designed to promptly address IP rights violations.
This innovative approach aims to secure a violation-free environment for IP rights holders and to increase public awareness about the importance of accessing creative works through legitimate platforms. The Ministry highlighted its success in defending the IP rights of prominent media entities such as Abu Dhabi Media Network, MBC, OSN Network, and BeIN media group, emphasizing the UAE's commitment to becoming a global center for creativity, innovation, and the knowledge economy.

Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for IP Rights Sector at the Ministry of Economy, underscored the comprehensive nature of the UAE's system for IP protection. This system encompasses legislative measures, including the enforcement of laws that regulate IP rights, thereby ensuring the protection of trademarks, neighboring rights, and copyrights. Dr. Al Muaini also pointed out the significant role of initiatives and awareness campaigns in fostering a secure and stimulating environment for creators and innovators.
He further stated that the UAE's copyright protection law marks a significant advancement in the IP rights legislative framework, supporting the growth of the digital and creative economy and reinforcing the UAE's status as an innovation hub. "The outcomes of the implementation of this approach have been positive on all levels," Dr. Al Muaini remarked. He highlighted that the Ministry, in cooperation with TDRA, had blocked 1,117 websites that infringed upon IP rights, thereby protecting the rights of several leading digital entertainment platforms.
The 'InstaBlock' initiative and its 'LiveBan' tool, specifically designed for handling copyright infringements during live broadcasts online, play pivotal roles in this comprehensive strategy. These measures not only prevent illegal broadcasting and publishing of creative works but also facilitate direct communication with legal rights holders to swiftly address any violations.
The Ministry's new IP protection system encompasses 11 diverse initiatives aimed at promoting innovation and creativity within the country. By creating a competitive and supportive environment, these initiatives enable inventors and creators to transform their innovative ideas into successful businesses and projects, further empowering talented individuals to utilize IP applications effectively.
