Transforming Healthcare: UAE Partners With US' ACEN To Elevate Nursing Standards

With world-class healthcare facilities, advanced medical technology, and a strong commitment to excellence, the UAE has become a leading destination for medical tourism. Backed by significant government investment in healthcare infrastructure, the country has positioned itself as a global hub for specialized treatments.

Its strategic location, seamless connectivity through a robust aviation network, and visa-friendly policies further enhance its appeal, making medical travel more accessible and convenient for patients worldwide.

Recently, an agreement between the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) under the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) and the US-based Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) marked a significant step towards enhancing the standards of nursing education.

This collaboration aims to align the academic programmes in nursing with global benchmarks, thereby improving the quality of healthcare education and meeting the objectives of the national healthcare sector.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) lays the groundwork for joint efforts in developing and implementing quality assurance policies specific to nursing programs in the UAE. It seeks to increase the credibility and international accreditation of these programmes.

This initiative includes conducting joint accreditation reviews to maintain high-quality standards. It aims to assist higher education institutions (HEIs) in the UAE in gaining worldwide accreditation, which in turn, will enhance the employment opportunities for graduates both within the country and abroad.

Prof. Amjad Mohd Qandil, the Acting Director of CAA at MoHESR, highlighted the MoU as a testament to the Ministry's dedication to elevating the standard of health professions education. "The agreement aligns UAE nursing programmes with international accreditation standards, reinforcing the country's status as a regional hub for medical education," Qandil remarked.

Furthermore, Qandil elaborated on how this agreement not only strengthens the quality assurance in academics but also fosters a collaborative environment between UAE-based HEIs and their international counterparts. This, according to him, cements the UAE's position as a prominent centre for health education.

He stressed that the agreement underscores the UAE's dedication to advancing higher education by offering opportunities for students, educators, and institutions. This includes access to the most current curricula, innovative teaching methods, technological advancements in education, and international partnerships.

Dr. Kathy Chappell, Chief Executive Officer of ACEN, echoed the enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "We share a commitment to elevating the quality of nursing education for all students and appreciate the opportunities that this partnership will offer for our respective organisations. We are excited that the resources of the ACEN will be available for students, educators, and institutions within the UAE and look forward to continued dialogue on behalf of the global nursing profession."

This collaboration also focuses on the exchange of knowledge pertaining to innovations in nursing education and the integration of curriculum with contemporary medical practices. Such initiatives are expected to ensure that the nursing education in the UAE remains cutting-edge and globally competitive.
