UAE Minister Reviews Compliance With Midday Break To Protect Workers From Summer Heat

Dr. Abdulrahman Al Awar, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, is actively monitoring the private sector's adherence to the Midday Break rule. This regulation prohibits work under direct sunlight from 12:30 to 3:00 pm, effective from 15th June to 15th September.

On Friday, Al Awar visited a construction site managed by Binghatti Developers. He aimed to evaluate the commitment of private sector companies to this rule, which has been in place for 20 years to ensure worker safety during high summer temperatures.

Assessing UAE's Midday Break Compliance

The initiative mandates that companies provide shaded areas for workers during the Midday Break. This measure helps protect workers from heat stress caused by sun exposure. Additionally, companies must offer adequate cooling, sufficient drinking water, first aid equipment, and other means to ensure worker comfort.

During his visit, Al Awar was accompanied by Muhammad Binghatti, Chairman of Binghatti Developers. They reviewed the company's key initiatives aimed at protecting workers and providing a safe working environment.

Inspection teams from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation are conducting field visits to work sites. These visits ensure compliance with the Midday Break rule. The Ministry also organises awareness campaigns highlighting the initiative's provisions and requirements.

In June, Al Awar visited a Sobha Realty construction site to assess their preparations before the Midday Break began. He toured rest areas and was briefed on the health and safety standards adopted by the company.

Collaborative Efforts for Worker Welfare

This year’s Midday Break coincides with another initiative to provide 6,000 rest stations for delivery workers across the UAE. An interactive map helps workers locate these stations easily. MoHRE collaborates with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Integrated Transport Centre in Abu Dhabi, Departments of Economic Development in each emirate, and delivery companies nationwide.

The Ministry encourages community members to report any violations of the Midday Break rule. Reports can be made through MoHRE’s call centre at 600590000 or via its website or smart application.

The Minister praised Binghatti Developers' efforts and noted significant commitment among private sector companies across the UAE. These companies adhere to health and safety standards set by MoHRE at work sites and labour accommodation facilities in collaboration with federal and local government sectors.

The Ministry also conducts medical examinations for workers and offers training on first aid procedures for outdoor worksite supervisors. This training focuses on addressing heat stress-related cases in collaboration with government and private sector partners.

This ongoing initiative aims to create a safe environment for workers amid rising summer temperatures while ensuring their health and safety are prioritised.
