UAE Launches Air Corridor Mapping Project For Air Taxis And Cargo Drones

The UAE is pioneering in urban transportation, embarking on an ambitious project to streamline urban travel through the introduction of air taxis and cargo drones. This project, which aims to integrate piloted and autonomous aerial vehicles into the urban landscape, represents a significant step towards modernizing mobility and enhancing the efficiency of transporting people and goods.

By collaborating with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) and its entities, the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and ASPIRE, the UAE is positioning itself as a leader in the future of urban mobility.

UAE Maps Air Corridors for Urban Transport

Within the coming 20 months, the UAE plans to establish air corridors and regulations that will link major airports and iconic destinations nationwide, facilitating the smooth operation of air taxis and drones.

"Air corridor mapping for piloted and autonomous air taxis and drones is a crucial milestone that will enable the seamless implementation of Advanced Air Mobility into the UAE's infrastructure. This initiative ensures the safe and efficient adoption of air mobility, delivering transformative solutions to urban transport and paving the way for a smarter, more connected future," stated Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA.

The UAE's initiative is bolstered by TII's expertise in airspace management to ensure the safe incorporation of these new transportation methods into cityscapes. "This transformative collaboration with GCAA is reshaping the future of urban transportation. By advancing airspace management and integrating piloted and autonomous air taxis and cargo drones, we are not only enhancing urban connectivity but also driving sustainable and accessible mobility solutions that will benefit future generations," mentioned Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII.

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is defined as the utilization of automated aircraft for innovative transport solutions in urban areas. This initiative will see TII leading the technical development of AAM, with ASPIRE working to unite stakeholders like regulators, industry leaders, and researchers. The goal is to create a comprehensive regulatory framework that guarantees both safety and efficiency in operations.

Prof. Enrico Natalizio, Chief Researcher of the Autonomous Robotics Research Center at TII, highlighted, "At TII, we're developing advanced AI-powered control, vision, and communication algorithms for autonomous systems that enable real-time decision-making for air taxis and drones. Having mastered this technology, we are able to propose methodologies for AAM corridors design to optimize routes, ensure collision avoidance, and integrate seamlessly with urban airspace, marking a key step toward efficient and safe autonomous air mobility in complex urban environments."
