UAE Spearheads Global Green Aviation Initiatives At ICAO Athens Seminar
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), recently underscored the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) dedication to shaping the future of civil aviation on a global scale. During his participation in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Seminar on Green Airports in Athens, Greece, on 18th and 19th April, Al Suwaidi conveyed the UAE's robust support for international endeavors aimed at fostering a transition towards a more sustainable aviation industry. This initiative aligns with both global sustainable development objectives and the UAE's strategic vision for the upcoming fifty years.
The seminar aimed to elevate awareness among stakeholders about pressing issues related to airports, particularly focusing on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF), and other cleaner energy alternatives. This includes sustainable infrastructure developments essential for facilitating the energy transition within airport operations. The event highlighted the significant challenges airports worldwide face in adapting to climate change, including forecasting its impacts on operations, devising appropriate strategies, securing investments, and upgrading infrastructure to support new aviation fuels and clean energy sources like hydrogen.

Eng. Mariam Al Balooshi, Vice President of the Environmental Protection Committee of the ICAO Council and Chair of the Environmental Committee of the Arab Civil Aviation Commission, led a keynote session titled "Era of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels (LCAF) and other Aviation Cleaner Energies." As the Chief Negotiator for the Climate Change File for the Aviation Sector in the UAE, Eng. Al Balooshi moderated discussions on how airports can support fuel production and tackle major environmental challenges facing the aviation industry. The session also reviewed international mandates aimed at reducing emissions from international aviation.
The conference saw active participation from industry partners across various sectors, including airlines, fuel producers, airport authorities, and ICAO members. These stakeholders engaged in meaningful dialogue about the challenges at hand, emphasizing the collective effort required to advance towards a greener aviation future. The UAE's leadership role in this international seminar highlights its commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive approach in contributing to global efforts aimed at reducing the aviation sector's carbon footprint.
