UAE Hosts Key Workshop To Combat Synthetic Opioids And NPS In Sea Freight

The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) recently spearheaded a regional workshop aimed at bolstering the prevention and interdiction of synthetic opioids and new psychoactive substances (NPS) via sea freights. This initiative, in partnership with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Criminal Information Centre to Combat Drugs, Dubai Police, and Naif Arab University for Security Sciences, saw the convergence of 100 specialists from 30 global security and policing agencies. The workshop's core mission was to refine the capabilities of personnel within Gulf and Arab drug enforcement agencies through the exchange of global expertise and the promotion of information sharing.

Spanning three days, the workshop covered a broad spectrum of topics including the identification of new psychoactive substances, INCB's implementation projects, the role of public-private partnerships in drug control, and strategies for the swift prohibition of hazardous substances. A significant focus was placed on preventing the misuse of legitimate shipping and logistics services for drug smuggling. Contributions came from a mix of government bodies, international organizations, and private sector entities, all united in their effort to combat drug-related crimes.

UAE's Global Stand Against Opioids in Freight

On its final day, the workshop emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in investigations, underscored by insights from government experts. Major General Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb from Dubai Police highlighted the department's dedication to fostering international collaboration in the fight against drug abuse. Similarly, Brigadier Khalid bin Muwaiza showcased the UAE's proactive stance in addressing drug and psychoactive substance challenges both locally and globally. He praised Dubai Police's integrated approach in working alongside national and international police agencies to dismantle organized criminal networks involved in drug smuggling.

The culmination of this workshop was marked by several key recommendations aimed at strengthening ongoing collaboration among the International Drug Control Board, governments, international organizations, and industry partners. This collective effort is deemed crucial for combating the illicit use of shipping services by traffickers dealing in hazardous substances.

Furthermore, the workshop underscored the necessity for a collaborative framework involving governments, international bodies, and private sector partners to continually update and share information on trafficking hazardous materials. The dissemination of INCB's lists to sea freight service providers and relevant stakeholders was highlighted as a critical step towards this goal. Establishing effective communication channels with sea freight providers and designating contact points were also identified as vital measures.

In conclusion, participants advocated for enhanced collaboration between sea freight service providers and government authorities through various means such as information exchange, awareness campaigns, joint patrols, and seaport inspection operations. These strategies are aimed at establishing robust regulatory controls to prevent the exploitation of shipping services for trafficking hazardous materials.
