UAE Leads Digital Transformation In Energy Sector With Advanced Technology And Innovation
The UAE is now a global hub for innovation and smart energy solutions, according to George Bou Mitri, President of Honeywell for the Middle East, Türkiye, and Central Asia. He highlighted the UAE's digital transformation in energy as a leading model for sustainable development powered by advanced technology and AI.
Honeywell is playing a significant role in this vision with projects like the Ruwais LNG initiative with ADNOC, which aims to produce 9.6 million tonnes annually. Bou Mitri noted that the UAE's approach involves integrating advanced technologies across its energy ecosystem, including LNG, hydrogen, solar energy, sustainable aviation fuel, and biofuel to reduce carbon emissions in transportation.

Bou Mitri stated that the global energy sector is expanding rapidly. By 2050, global energy demand is expected to increase by 32%, while electricity demand could rise by over 75%. This necessitates comprehensive technological solutions to balance increasing demand with emission reduction and efficiency improvements.
He also mentioned that digital transformation is crucial for the future of energy. Honeywell is developing the region’s first fully autonomous control room with Borouge. This facility will manage petrochemical operations without direct human intervention, enhancing operational efficiency through agent-based AI.
The UAE has become a key destination for developing technologies related to emissions management and AI applications aimed at improving facility performance and workforce productivity through digitalisation. These advancements are vital as the global energy sector faces a skills gap, with over half of its workforce aged above 45.
Bou Mitri explained that technology can accelerate training for young talent and transfer expertise to ensure continuous development in the sector. "Through technology, we can accelerate the training of young talent and transfer accumulated expertise to the next generation," he said.
Investment Momentum in Energy Sector
Energy investments in the region are gaining momentum, with expectations to exceed US$130 billion this year in oil and gas alone. There are also major expansions in clean energy investments such as hydrogen, LNG, and carbon capture projects. This underscores the region’s growing role in driving global energy transition.
Bou Mitri emphasised that the UAE exemplifies openness and synergy between public and private sectors to develop innovative solutions impacting the global energy industry. "The solutions created here in the UAE extend their influence far beyond its borders," he stated.
The UAE's leadership in clean energy projects aims to reduce emissions while improving operational efficiency. The country is spearheading efforts towards clean energy through significant projects that contribute globally.
