UAE Champions A Greener Future In The Regional Fight Against Desertification

The UAE is at the forefront of combating desertification in the region, showcasing its commitment through the significant expansion of green spaces and protected areas, according to WAM reports. With 49 natural reserves to its name, including 33 terrestrial ones covering over 13,069.8 square kilometres, the UAE's efforts in preserving the environment are commendable. As the nation prepares to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th, under the theme "Our Land. Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration", it highlights its dedication to land restoration, battling desertification, and enhancing drought resilience globally.

For over 50 years, the UAE has implemented a variety of strategies and initiatives to protect land and fight desertification. These include the National Biodiversity Strategy, the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2022-2023, and the Blue Carbon Project, among others. These efforts have resulted in the transformation of extensive desert areas into vibrant green spaces, farms, and gardens. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) reports more than 38,000 farms across the UAE, utilizing diverse agricultural practices and production systems.

In addition to land transformation, the UAE has focused on water preservation and agricultural innovation. The construction of dams has played a crucial role in providing irrigation water, while research centres and experimental stations have been established to focus on desertification and climate change. Notably, the UAE is a pioneer in the region for adopting artificial rain, enhancing water resources, and increasing green spaces to combat desertification and drought.

Drone technology has been employed for a comprehensive survey of agricultural areas, aiming at the restoration of degraded lands and the development of existing agricultural zones. MoCCAE has utilized drones to plant over 6.25 million seeds of local trees across the country, with the germination process currently under close observation.

The UAE's commitment to environmental sustainability is also evident in its ambitious target of planting 100 million mangrove seedlings by 2030, as stated in its second report to the UNFCCC. This initiative is set to significantly boost soil protection and natural habitats, contributing to the global fight against climate change.

On the international stage, the UAE has engaged actively in combating desertification by signing the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and participating in global and regional meetings. Furthermore, its involvement in the International Drought Resilience Alliance (IDRA), launched by Spain and Senegal, underscores its commitment to building drought resilience on a global scale.

The UAE's foreign assistance programs have also played a pivotal role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices worldwide, aiming to transform desert lands into fertile agricultural areas. The COP28 climate summit, hosted by the UAE in 2023, marked a significant milestone in global efforts to address climate change challenges, including desertification and drought, through the exchange of experiences and expertise.

Through these comprehensive measures and international collaborations, the UAE continues to lead by example in the global fight against desertification, showcasing its dedication to creating a sustainable future for the planet.
