UAE Champions Peace And Humanitarian Aid At OIC Council's 50th Session
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, led the UAE delegation at the 50th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The event took place from August 29 to 30, 2024, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Sheikh Shakhboot delivered a speech on behalf of the UAE.
In his address, Sheikh Shakhboot praised Mauritania for its leadership during the 49th session in 2023. He also congratulated Cameroon for hosting and presiding over the current session. He highlighted the UAE’s dedication to peace and security by fostering national awareness that promotes tolerance and coexistence.
Sheikh Shakhboot emphasised that humanitarian work is a core aspect of the UAE's ethos since its inception. This approach transcends ethnicity, nationality, or colour, reflecting principles laid down by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan continues this mission, enhancing the UAE’s role in peace and humanitarian initiatives globally.
The minister stressed the urgency of halting the conflict in Gaza to prevent further instability. He called for restraint amid escalating regional tensions. The UAE collaborates with regional and international partners to stabilise Gaza post-conflict through a comprehensive strategy aimed at establishing order and security.
Sheikh Shakhboot noted that the UAE is the largest donor of humanitarian aid to Gaza, contributing 33 percent of total aid sent to the region. Regarding Sudan, he expressed deep concern over severe food insecurity reaching famine levels in some areas. He urged conflicting parties to allow safe and unhindered delivery of urgent humanitarian aid as per United Nations Security Council Resolution 2736 (2024).
Importance of Multilateral Action
Concluding his speech, Sheikh Shakhboot reaffirmed the UAE's belief in multilateral action to tackle challenges facing the Islamic world. He stressed that platforms like OIC are vital for promoting dialogue and collective action on an international scale.
The session underscored the UAE's ongoing commitment to peace, tolerance, and humanitarian efforts both regionally and internationally. The country's proactive stance aims to foster stability and support those in need through collaborative efforts with global partners.
