UAE Unveils Green Certificates To Foster Eco-Friendly Building Standards

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has introduced the National Green Certificates Programme to encourage eco-friendly building practices. This initiative aligns with the goals of the National Demand-side Management Programme and the National Green Building Regulation.

MoEI will provide technical support and consultations to participating businesses, ensuring they achieve the highest sustainability standards. The programme sets specific benchmarks for energy efficiency, water management, indoor air quality, and sustainable building materials.

UAE s New Green Building Certificates

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, stated, "The Programme is a framework for classifications and requirements for enhancing sustainability and cutting down the carbon footprint of commercial buildings through identifying unified basics that ensure the latest world-class criteria for sustainable buildings are applied. We at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure are committed to advancing sustainable, environment-friendly practices across the board...(it's) another step in our journey to drive a green economy and sustainable development."

Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, highlighted that this initiative aims to reduce energy and water consumption while lowering the sector's carbon footprint. He noted it would contribute significantly to achieving the UAE's net-zero target by 2050 and help build future-ready infrastructure.

To bolster the Programme, MoEI signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). The first MoU was with First Abu Dhabi Bank. This agreement focuses on exploring potential collaborations in green finance solutions to enhance the UAE's built environment sector. It includes supporting energy efficiency targets through innovative financing solutions and promoting green finance products.

The second MoU was with Aldar Properties. This partnership aims to implement green finance solutions tailored specifically for enhancing the built environment sector in the UAE. They also agreed on joint initiatives to promote energy-efficient practices and technologies within this sector.

The third MoU involved Pact Carbon. This agreement supports other participants in accessing global markets to sell carbon credits. It aims to facilitate broader participation in international carbon trading markets.

The fourth MoU was signed with Meagle Energy. This collaboration establishes a framework for cooperation between both parties to provide energy auditing and Measurement and Verification (M&V) services for the National Green Certificates Programme. Meagle Energy will conduct energy audits following MoEI's standards and guidelines.

This comprehensive approach ensures that all aspects of sustainability are covered, from financial support to technical expertise. By integrating these efforts, MoEI aims to create a robust infrastructure that meets future development needs while adhering to stringent environmental standards.

The National Green Certificates Programme represents a significant step towards promoting sustainable building practices in the UAE. Through collaborative efforts with various stakeholders, MoEI is committed to driving a green economy and achieving long-term sustainability goals.
