UAE Media Council And TRDA Team Up With TikTok For Family Online Safety Initiative

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has launched a media campaign in collaboration with the UAE Media Council and TikTok. This initiative, titled "Family Online Safety", aims to raise community awareness and promote safe browsing practices for children and families on websites and social media platforms.

The campaign features a series of short awareness videos designed to educate children and families on safe digital platform usage. Topics include privacy, online gaming, cyberbullying, screen time management, and parental control tools. Social media influencers have also participated, sharing their experiences and highlighting the importance of safe use practices.

To support the initiative, cinemas, theatres, and television channels across the UAE have been enlisted under the slogan "Family Online Safety". This broad collaboration aims to reach a wide audience and reinforce the campaign's message. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, TDRA Director General, commented on the campaign's launch, emphasising TDRA's commitment to societal roles outlined in its strategies and values.

Al Mesmar stated, "TDRA actively fulfills its societal role as outlined in its institutional strategies and values. With a strong focus on various segments of society, TDRA prioritises children and families by launching awareness initiatives and programmes aimed at enhancing their online safety." He added that the UAE's high internet usage increases the likelihood of potential errors, making such campaigns crucial for raising awareness about potential threats.

Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi, Secretary-General of the UAE Media Council, highlighted the Council's commitment to protecting children and families from content that contradicts UAE principles and values. He mentioned that partnerships with government entities and digital platforms are essential for this cause. The UAE Media Council has developed legislation to regulate media content across all platforms, ensuring a safe digital environment for children nationwide.

Al Shehhi emphasised the significance of educating families about best practices to ensure their children's digital safety. He stressed the importance of providing necessary tools and mechanisms to effectively address any challenges they may encounter online.

Jinan Al-Hashli, Head of Public Policy at TikTok GCC, praised the campaign, stating, "At TikTok, we are dedicated to fostering a safe environment for our digital communities. Our partnership with TDRA and the UAE Media Council to launch the 'Interactive Family Safety Guide' aligns with this commitment."

Al-Hashli added that this initiative aims to empower digital communities with essential information and tools to safeguard their families across all digital platforms. She expressed enthusiasm about contributing to this strategic goal, reflecting the values and priorities of families and communities.

Focus on Privacy and Data Protection

The campaign underscores the importance of privacy when using the Internet. It highlights protecting personal data that should not be shared and covers privacy controls like digital fingerprinting. The initiative educates users on managing these controls effectively to prevent unauthorised access to personal information.

The collaborative effort between TDRA, UAE Media Council, and TikTok aims to raise awareness on various internet-related topics. These include applications and uses of the internet, policies regulating social media content, platform-monitoring measures, and the significance of partnerships in ensuring digital safety.

This comprehensive approach ensures that families are well-informed about online safety practices. It equips them with knowledge to navigate digital platforms securely while maintaining privacy and protecting personal data.
