UAE Launches Emirates Polar Programme To Strengthen Global Research Efforts
The UAE has unveiled a new polar research initiative to enhance its role in global polar studies. This announcement was made during the UAE Government's Annual Meetings 2024. Mariam Almheiri, who heads the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and chairs the UAE Polar Mission Steering Committee, shared insights into this project. It has been developed over the past year with contributions from various government bodies and Khalifa University.
The project aims to establish a Polar Research Center at Khalifa University. It will focus on forming strategic international partnerships and participating in global polar missions. The initiative also involves signing relevant treaties to bolster the UAE's presence in polar research. Scientists, experts, and diplomats have collaborated to identify key research priorities that cover scientific, technological, and commercial applications.

Almheiri highlighted the UAE's commitment to advancing polar science due to its strategic importance and global impact. She noted that despite challenges, the project seeks to prepare Emirati scientists for international missions in polar regions. "Two Emiratis embark on their Antarctic mission tomorrow, November 7th," she announced, "and another mission is scheduled for the Arctic in the summer of 2025, extending the UAE's scientific presence to both poles."
The UAE's involvement in polar research aligns with its dedication to soft power and inspiring future generations in science. The nation aims to build national scientific capacity while advocating for global climate action and environmental causes. Almheiri emphasized these motivations as key drivers behind joining leading efforts in polar research.
Regarding international agreements, Almheiri confirmed that the Cabinet has approved signing all necessary treaties related to polar research. The UAE has received invitations to participate in significant programs like Antarctica InSync and the 33rd Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. Khalifa University's upcoming projects will further contribute to these efforts.
This initiative marks a significant step for the UAE in expanding its scientific influence globally. By engaging in polar research, it aims to contribute valuable insights into climate change and environmental preservation while fostering collaboration with international partners.
