UAE Landmarks Shine In Red To Elevate Tuberculosis Awareness On World TB Day

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) in the United Arab Emirates took a significant step towards raising awareness about tuberculosis (TB) by lighting up several iconic landmarks in red on 24th March, in observance of World TB Day. This year's theme, "Yes! We can end TB," was brought to life through the illumination of Dubai Frame, Mohammed bin Rashid Library, Fujairah Fort, Zayed Sports Complex in Fujairah, and Ajman Museum. This initiative was part of a broader effort, conducted in collaboration with various partners and institutions, to enhance public understanding of TB and underscore the importance of early detection and prevention.

Alongside the landmark illuminations, MoHAP organized an informative lecture for its employees and a series of educational activities across the nation. These initiatives targeted diverse community segments, including individuals in health centres and workplaces, aiming to improve awareness about the symptoms, causes, and preventive strategies of TB. World TB Day serves as a crucial platform for broadening public understanding of TB, its prevention, treatment, and the significant public health challenges it presents.

UAE Marks TB Awareness with Red Lights

Observing World TB Day in the UAE also shines a light on the diagnostic and therapeutic services provided free of charge by the ministry to those infected with TB. This highlights the UAE's commitment to combating this pressing public health issue. Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Public Health Sector, emphasized the UAE's success in reducing the incidence of TB and its efforts to enhance global collaboration and support scientific research.

Dr. Al Rand further highlighted that the UAE is aligned with the WHO Regional Action Plan on Tuberculosis for the Eastern Mediterranean Region 2023-2030. The ministry has launched comprehensive preventive measures to manage and curb TB's spread. These measures include improving surveillance systems, setting up efficient monitoring frameworks, ensuring uninterrupted access to medications, providing targeted training for healthcare professionals, and conducting proactive screenings for residency applicants.

Dr. Nada Al Marzouqi, Director of the Department of Public Health and Prevention, reaffirmed MoHAP's commitment to enhancing public health awareness about TB through targeted campaigns and programmes. These initiatives are supported by sophisticated healthcare systems and strategic plans aimed at boosting public awareness and knowledge. The collective efforts of MoHAP and its partners are crucial in ensuring seamless access to care and support services for patients, thereby promoting health and well-being for all members of society.

The observance of World TB Day in the UAE underscores not only the country's dedication to eradicating TB but also its role in supporting international efforts towards this goal. By fostering community engagement and enhancing public health awareness, MoHAP continues to play a pivotal role in curbing the spread of communicable diseases and promoting a sustainable, healthy environment.
