UAE Joins Forces With UNESCO's ISSN Network For Knowledge Preservation

The UAE, through the National Library and Archives (NLA), has joined the Paris-based International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) International Centre of UNESCO. This membership was formalised with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed virtually by Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Director General of the NLA, and Dr. Gaelle Bequet, Director of the ISSN International Centre.

Al Ali highlighted that aligning UAE's periodicals with the ISSN will standardise intellectual production in the country. This initiative will aid the National Archives and Library in identifying cultural and knowledge products, benefiting researchers and the public both locally and internationally.

UAE Partners with UNESCO ISSN

Dr. Gaelle Bequet emphasised that this agreement represents a shared vision and dedication to excellence. She noted, "The MoU is a milestone in our collaborative efforts." Both parties view this as a significant step towards future cooperation.

Dr. Béquet expressed optimism about further collaboration between the two entities. She stated, "The MoU is a testament to our shared vision and commitment." The agreement marks an important point in their relationship, aiming to enhance inventory counting and listing of publications issued in the UAE.

The ISSN International Centre is tasked with maintaining and publishing the ISSN Portal, coordinating activities of national centres, and assigning ISSNs to international publications. It also handles publications from countries without an ISSN National Centre.

Commitment to Excellence

Al Ali expressed gratitude for this partnership, underscoring its importance in preserving knowledge. He said that standardising periodicals will help inform researchers and interested parties about these publications' content.

Dr. Béquet added that this MoU signifies a commitment to achieving results that satisfy both parties. She affirmed that it enriches readers' and researchers' knowledge by ensuring comprehensive inventory counting and listing of UAE publications.

This new membership underscores the UAE's dedication to cultural preservation and knowledge dissemination on an international scale.
