UAE Implements Integrated Care System To Improve Quality Of Life For Senior Citizens
The UAE honours its senior citizens with a robust care system and advanced services, ensuring they lead dignified lives. This commitment is highlighted on the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated annually on 1st October. The day acknowledges their contributions and vital role in enhancing social cohesion and quality of life.
Through various community institutions, the UAE has launched initiatives to improve the psychological and physical well-being of older adults. These efforts uphold their status as role models and sources of inspiration within Emirati society. The Family Development Foundation (FDF), in collaboration with the Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi (DCD Abu Dhabi), plays a significant role in these initiatives.
FDF supports senior citizens through Barakat Al Dar social clubs, which provide a nurturing environment with holistic programmes. These programmes enhance physical and mental health, ensure social well-being, and improve quality of life. Activities include awareness workshops, regular medical check-ups, nutritional counselling, sports sessions, swimming classes, and home social care services.
The Barakatna initiative is another effort by FDF in cooperation with DCD Abu Dhabi and other entities in Abu Dhabi's social sector. It aims to improve essential home care efficiency for seniors, ensuring they live in healthy family environments. This initiative also strengthens family bonds by developing an integrated community service system that reduces daily burdens.
Wafa Al Ali, Director of Family Development Department at FDF, stated that the Foundation’s mission is to provide an environment befitting senior citizens' status and enrich their quality of life. She noted events organised for the International Day of Older Persons, including the Senior Citizens Forum. This forum promotes social interaction, knowledge sharing, and educational activities to strengthen community engagement.
"The forum represents a strategic platform to exchange insights and best practices aimed at providing senior citizens with the highest standards of dignified living," said Wafa Al Ali. It featured dialogue sessions on topics like digital transformation of services and launched supportive initiatives such as the Barakatna Clinic.
Integrating Seniors into Society
The Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an continues integrating seniors into community life through dedicated programmes like Journey of Generations. This initiative fosters intergenerational connections and promotes healthy lifestyles for seniors and residents alike.
Ma’an collaborates with partners to launch innovative projects like the Community Football Project. This project unites different societal segments through sports activities encouraging active living. Such initiatives empower seniors, strengthen their sense of belonging, and reinforce their ongoing societal roles.
The UAE's comprehensive approach ensures that senior citizens are valued members of society. By providing advanced services and fostering community engagement, the nation upholds its authentic values while enhancing seniors' quality of life.
