UAE And Hungary Forge Economic Cooperation Agreement To Enhance Trade And Investment

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Hungary have recently taken a significant step towards enhancing their economic relationship by signing an agreement designed to boost trade and investment in areas of mutual interest. This pivotal agreement was formalized in Budapest, with Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, the UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Trade, and Péter Szijjártó, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, at the forefront of the ceremony. The presence of Saud Hamad Al-Shamsi, the UAE’s Ambassador to Hungary, underscored the importance of this event.

This new economic cooperation agreement is set to fortify bilateral ties and stimulate growth across several key sectors including industry, commerce, investment, tourism, logistics, infrastructure, and real estate. A notable aim is to enhance non-oil trade between the two nations, which has already seen a remarkable increase in recent years. In 2023 alone, non-oil trade surged by 23.1 percent, reaching over US$1.127 billion from $409 million in 2019.

Dr. Al Zeyoudi highlighted the agreement's role in amplifying trade and investment opportunities by capitalizing on the combined economic strengths of both countries. He emphasized the shared goal of sustainable economic growth through increased trade and investment flows. This collaboration is expected to open doors for private sector partnerships in various pivotal areas contributing to economic diversification.

Péter Szijjártó expressed his anticipation for elevating Hungary's bilateral relations with the UAE, a key trade partner in the Arab region. He pointed out that the agreement lays down specific frameworks and vital programs for fostering bilateral cooperation in priority sectors. This strategic move is anticipated to diversify and strengthen economic and commercial relations between the two countries over the coming years.

As part of the agreement's implementation strategy, a joint committee will be established to oversee and facilitate economic engagement. This committee will develop programs and initiatives that are mutually beneficial, ensuring their successful execution. This development builds upon a cooperation program agreed upon in 2022 between the two nations, which highlighted nine key sectors for collaboration including trade and investment, talent attraction, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), water resource management, energy and renewable energy, tourism and culture, logistics and supply chain management, research and technology, as well as space and education.

The signing of this economic cooperation agreement marks a significant milestone in UAE-Hungary relations. It not only aims to boost non-oil trade but also sets a solid foundation for future collaborations that will benefit both countries economically. Through this partnership, both nations are poised to explore new opportunities that will contribute to their long-term growth and prosperity.
