UAE Welcomes US Secretary Of Energy Chris Wright For His First International Mission Focused On Energy Cooperation
The United Arab Emirates is set to welcome Chris Wright, the United States Secretary of Energy, on his inaugural international visit in this role. Abu Dhabi marks the first stop in his Middle East tour. This visit follows a successful UAE delegation trip to Washington, DC in March, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties, particularly in energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, and artificial intelligence (AI).
During his stay, Secretary Wright will meet with key UAE leaders from government and industry. These include Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; Mohamed Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment; Mariam Almheiri from the Presidential Court; Yousef Al Otaiba, UAE Ambassador to the US; and Martina Strong, US Ambassador to the UAE.

The discussions will focus on enhancing cooperation for sustainable economic growth and energy innovation between the two countries. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber expressed enthusiasm about Secretary Wright's visit: "We are honoured to welcome Secretary Wright to the UAE on his first official overseas visit... His presence reflects the strength and depth of the UAE-US strategic relationship and our shared commitment to energy security, economic growth, and technological advancement."
Secretary Wright will also engage with senior figures in energy, AI, and investment sectors. He will meet leaders like Mohamed Al Hammadi of ENEC; Mohamed Al Ramahi of Masdar; Musabbeh Al Kaabi of ADNOC Upstream; Khaled Salmeen of ADNOC Downstream; Thomas Pramotedham of Presight; Dr. Bakheet Al Katheeri of Mubadala UAE Investments Platform; Syed Basar Shueb of IHC; Ahmed Yahia of MGX; and Magzhan Kenesbai from AIQ.
A significant event during this visit is the Future Energy Leaders Majlis co-hosted by Secretary Wright and Dr. Sultan Al Jaber. This gathering will bring together young leaders from both nations – including alumni from MIT and UC Berkeley – alongside representatives from the US Department of Energy and the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.
This event underscores both countries' dedication to nurturing future talent for global energy transformation. The collaboration highlights a shared vision for developing next-generation leaders who can drive advancements in energy technology.
Expanding Energy Footprint
The visit also signifies a growing alignment between the UAE and US regarding energy abundance's role in supporting industrial growth and AI's rapid rise. Through entities like XRG and Masdar, the UAE is expanding its energy footprint in America with strategic investments in hydrogen, renewables, LNG, chemicals, and partnerships with ExxonMobil and NextDecade.
These initiatives are part of a broader effort that includes inward investment by US companies in the UAE as well as the UAE-US 123 Agreement for Civil Nuclear Cooperation. They aim to establish secure, sustainable energy systems essential for powering future economies.
Secretary Wright expressed anticipation for his trip: "I’m looking forward to making my first trip to the United Arab Emirates as Secretary of Energy... We will continue this dialogue to strengthen our countries’ strategic relationship." His visit aims at reinforcing strategic ties while advancing global energy security through ongoing discussions initiated earlier this year.
