UAE Hosts 43rd Meeting Of High Level Panel For Sustainable Ocean Economy In Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates recently hosted the 43rd meeting of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. This marked the first time this global assembly took place in the UAE since it joined the panel. The event, held in Abu Dhabi, highlighted the UAE's leadership in nature conservation and its commitment to international efforts aimed at protecting oceans and fostering global cooperation for a sustainable future.

Over three days, representatives from 15 member countries gathered in Abu Dhabi to advance shared commitments to sustainable ocean management. They aimed to deepen international cooperation for the health and resilience of the world's oceans. The meeting was co-chaired by Special Envoy Georg Børsting from Norway and Ambassador Ilana Seid from Palau, with Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak hosting as the UAE President’s Sherpa to the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.

During the meeting, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak shared updates on the UAE’s National Ocean Panel. This initiative was launched earlier this year at the UN General Assembly and formally initiated as a whole-of-government effort in November. Al Mubarak expressed pride in welcoming members, stating, "The UAE is a proud member of the Ocean Panel family and honoured to welcome representatives of the Ocean Panel to Abu Dhabi."

Al Mubarak emphasised that the UAE's heritage and identity have been shaped by the sea. This connection guides their commitment to ocean stewardship. She added that aligning national efforts with collective visions for 100% sustainable ocean management is crucial. "We value the partnership of all member countries as we work together to secure a healthy ocean for future generations," she noted.

Throughout the gathering, participants reflected on global developments following events like COP30 and the IUCN World Conservation Congress. They recognised how vital oceans are in addressing climate resilience, food security, and sustainable development. Delegates discussed strengthening scientific collaboration, enhancing knowledge exchange, and supporting national implementation efforts.

Special Envoy Georg Børsting acknowledged the UAE's role by saying, "We are grateful to the UAE for hosting this meeting and for its strong engagement within the Ocean Panel." He highlighted that holding this gathering shortly after significant conservation events underscores UAE’s leadership in global ocean protection efforts.

Commitment to Sustainable Management

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of coordinated action and multilateral cooperation among panel members. Representatives commended UAE’s ongoing contributions towards safeguarding ocean health globally. The collaboration demonstrated during this event provides momentum as they work toward achieving 100% sustainable ocean management.

The discussions underscored an increasing recognition of oceans' importance in tackling various global challenges. As nations continue their collaborative efforts, they aim to ensure that future generations inherit a healthy marine environment.
