UAE Medical Team Achieves Milestone With Removal Of 30.5kg Ovarian Tumour

In a significant medical achievement, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), a leading hospital in the UAE known for handling serious and complex care, has recently announced the successful removal of an exceptionally large ovarian tumour. Weighing in at 30.5kg, such tumours are exceedingly rare, making the operation a notable event in the medical community. The procedure, which lasted 1.5 hours, was expertly performed by Dr. Muhieddine Seoud alongside SSMC's obstetrics and gynecological (OB-GYN) surgical team.

The patient, a 63-year-old limousine driver named Virginia Asuncion, had been experiencing severe abdominal pain and discomfort for over three years before being admitted to SSMC's Emergency Department (ED) on March 23. Following an immediate referral to the hospital’s OB-GYN specialists, surgery was conducted on the same day through SSMC’s emergency service, leading to a successful outcome with the tumour removed intact.

Dr. Seoud, treating consultant physician and chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at SSMC, highlighted the rarity of such conditions and tumours in the region. He noted that this was the largest tumour ever presented and removed at SSMC and one of the largest recorded in the UAE. The patient's abnormal abdominal distention was immediately apparent to the emergency department and OB-GYN specialists upon her arrival.

The operation involved an incision through which the tumour was completely removed without any spillage or cuts. The patient's recovery period is expected to be three weeks, with no complications reported during or after the surgery. Dr. Seoud expressed his delight at the patient's smooth recovery process.

Virginia Asuncion shared her gratitude towards Dr. Seoud and the entire medical team at SSMC for their professionalism and support throughout her treatment and recovery. She praised the dedication and compassion of everyone involved, from doctors to nurses and staff, in helping her navigate through this challenging period in her life.

He mentioned that SSMC aims for a holistic approach that addresses patient concerns and preferences at an individual level.
