UAE Recognised For Space Sector Achievements At Global Diplomacy Forum

The United Arab Emirates' notable strides in space exploration and diplomacy were celebrated at the Meridian Space Diplomacy Forum in Washington DC, where the UAE Ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al Otaiba, was honoured with the Meridian International Center’s inaugural Global Leadership Award for Space Diplomacy. This prestigious recognition underscores the UAE's significant contributions and partnerships in the space sector, particularly highlighting its collaborative efforts with the United States.

Alia Al Suwaidi, Deputy Chief of Mission, received the award on behalf of Ambassador Al Otaiba. In her acceptance speech, she underscored the collective efforts and achievements of the UAE Space Agency and Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center. She detailed the UAE's milestones in space exploration, including launching its first satellite developed within the country, sending two astronauts to the International Space Station, and becoming only the fifth nation to reach Mars.

The award also shines a light on the deepening space collaboration between the UAE and the US over the past decade. The partnership now extends to astronaut training and missions with NASA, including the UAE's involvement in developing the airlock for NASA’s Gateway project, which is set to be humanity's first lunar space station. Furthermore, collaborations with US research institutions have been instrumental in advancing the UAE's space ambitions, notably contributing to the success of the Emirates Mars Mission ‘Hope Probe’ and preparations for an upcoming mission to the Asteroid Belt.

Ambassador Stuart Holliday, CEO of Meridian International Center, lauded the UAE’s space achievements as extraordinary, especially considering the relatively recent inception of its space program. His remarks highlighted not only the technical accomplishments but also the diplomatic finesse with which the UAE has navigated its space journey.

The forum itself was part of Space Diplomacy Week, organized by the State Department to foster dialogue among global space industry stakeholders. The event aimed at promoting collaborative strategies and innovative diplomatic solutions for responsible conduct in space exploration. It brought together diplomats, officials from various space agencies, and executives from the private sector to discuss future challenges and opportunities in space diplomacy.

This recognition of Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba and by extension, the UAE’s efforts in space diplomacy and exploration by such a distinguished forum underscores a significant acknowledgment of their role on the international stage. It not only celebrates past achievements but also sets a positive trajectory for future endeavors in space exploration and international cooperation.
