UAE Special Envoy Dr. Sultan Al Jaber Strengthens Bilateral Relations With Germany Through Key Meetings
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE's Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, recently concluded a visit to Berlin. The trip aimed to enhance bilateral ties and explore collaborative opportunities with Germany. During his stay, Dr. Al Jaber engaged in high-level discussions with German officials and business leaders, accompanied by Ahmed Al Attar, the UAE's Ambassador to Germany.
Dr. Al Jaber met with several key figures, including Dr. Johann David Wadephul, Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Serap Güler, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office. Their discussions focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between the UAE and Germany. Both sides highlighted the importance of exploring new collaboration avenues across priority sectors.
In a meeting with Katharina Reiche, Germany's Minister of Economy and Energy, they discussed recent developments in bilateral relations. They also reviewed strategic initiatives like the UAE–Germany Energy Partnership initiated in 2017. Opportunities for cooperation in energy, industry, infrastructure, investment, trade, healthcare, and tourism were also explored.
The meetings underscored the significance of supporting private sector growth and creating a conducive business environment. Both nations affirmed that these sectors are crucial for sustainable development and economic growth.
Dr. Al Jaber also held talks with Thorsten Frei from the Federal Chancellery and other officials like Dr. Levin Holle and Hendrik Wüst. These discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in government operations and expanding trade between both countries to support sustainable development.
A meeting with Dr. Volker Treier from the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce focused on boosting institutional cooperation to aid business communities in both nations.
Parliamentary Engagements
During his visit, Dr. Al Jaber also met with heads of various parliamentary committees in the German Bundestag. Discussions revolved around strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding strategic partnerships while highlighting parliaments' role in fostering political and economic collaboration through effective legislation.
The non-oil trade between the UAE and Germany reached AED50 billion (US$13.6 billion) in 2024, reflecting a 4% increase over 2023 figures. This rise was largely due to a 43% surge in UAE exports driven by pearls, precious metals (up 112.5%), machinery, and equipment (up 85%). Imports also grew by 6% during this period.
Trade Growth Continues
The first four months of 2025 saw bilateral trade grow by 17.7% compared to the same period last year. UAE exports increased by 77%, while imports rose by 16%. Key contributors to this growth were exports of pearls, precious metals, and machinery which more than quadrupled in value.
This visit underscores ongoing efforts to deepen ties between the UAE and Germany across various sectors while supporting sustainable economic development through enhanced cooperation.
