Sheikh Abdullah Leads G20 Steering Committee, Sets UAE's 2024 Summit Priorities
H H Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, recently led a virtual meeting of the G20 Steering Committee, attended by numerous ministers and officials from the UAE. The session focused on outlining the UAE's strategic involvement in the G20's activities and the upcoming Summit in 2024. Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts among committee members to bolster the UAE's role both regionally and internationally through proactive participation and initiatives within the G20 framework.
During this meeting, Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the significance of sustaining and building upon the progress achieved by engaging in various G20 tracks, groups, and task forces. He outlined the UAE's priorities for its involvement in the Group's activities and summit, centered around the theme "Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet." Furthermore, he touched upon the priorities set by Brazil's presidency of the Group, focusing on enhancing global governance, combating poverty and hunger, and tackling climate change alongside energy transitions.

The UAE's top diplomat also expressed gratitude towards the Republic of Brazil for extending an invitation to the UAE to participate in the G20 summit. He commended the efforts of ministers and various UAE entities involved in the G20 engagements. Additionally, updates on the UAE's contributions to the G20 were shared, including preparations for significant meetings within the Sherpa Track, Finance Track, and private sector working groups.
It is important to note that the UAE has been an active participant in G20 activities and summits as a guest country on several occasions, including in Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2020, and France in 2011. This consistent involvement underscores the UAE's commitment to contributing to global discussions on pressing issues and its role as a key player on the international stage.
