Omar Al Marzouqi Carries UAE Flag At Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony
Equestrian rider Omar Al Marzouqi and cyclist Safiya Al Sayegh proudly carried the UAE's flag during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday, July 26. The event took place on the River Seine, marking a significant moment for the UAE. The UAE’s delegation passed by boat in the flag bearers' episode, which began with Greece, the cradle of the Olympic Games.
Omar Al Marzouqi previously won a silver medal in individual showjumping at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in 2018. In Hangzhou, he contributed to the UAE's team bronze at the Asian Games and secured a silver medal in the individual competition. These accomplishments highlight his dedication and skill in equestrian sports.

The 21-year-old Al Marzouqi expressed his pride and honour at being chosen to carry the UAE flag at such a historic event. He noted that these moments remain etched in memory and represent a bright spot in athletes' careers. "This historic moment represents a great motive for the Emirati athletes to deliver the best results in the competitions in order to raise the flag again on the Olympic podiums," he told Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Discussing preparations for upcoming competitions, Al Marzouqi mentioned that there were several stages of preparation in Germany, Britain, and Italy. This rigorous training aimed to ensure that athletes are well-prepared for their events. The national equestrian team will compete with 20 other teams in show jumping starting early August, followed by individual competitions on August 5 and 6 with participation from 75 riders.
Al Marzouqi also wished success to all members of the sports delegation participating in various events. He added, "I am delighted to start the Paris Olympics by carrying the nation’s flag alongside athlete Safiya Al Sayegh, who has worked hard over the past period. I wish her and all athletes in the five sports in which the UAE delegation is participating great success and positive results that reflect the progress of the Olympic and sports movement in the United Arab Emirates."
This event marks a proud moment for both Omar Al Marzouqi and Safiya Al Sayegh as they represent their country on an international stage. Their participation underscores their dedication and hard work leading up to this prestigious event.
The opening ceremony on River Seine was not only a spectacle but also an inspiration for future generations of Emirati athletes aiming for excellence on global platforms.
