UAE Firm Delivers Clean Electricity To Over 274,000 Homes In Chad With New Solar PV Plant
Global South Utilities (GSU), an investment firm based in Abu Dhabi, has launched the Noor Chad 50 MW Solar PV Plant in N’Djamena. This facility is set to supply clean energy to approximately 274,000 homes throughout Chad. The event was attended by key figures including Mahamat Ahmad ALHABO, Chad's Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Presidency, along with other ministers, GSU CEO Ali Alshimmari, and UAE Ambassador Rashid Al Shamsi.
The Noor Chad project is a significant achievement as it is the first solar PV initiative of its size in Chad. Completed swiftly, it represents a pivotal moment for the nation's energy landscape and sets the stage for future renewable energy projects. The plant combines 50 MW of solar power with a 5 megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), aiming to cut over 1.36 million tonnes of carbon emissions during its operational life.

This project marks GSU's inaugural venture from signing to commissioning in Africa. Ali Alshimmari stated, "It proves how quickly these markets can move when there is determination and effective partnerships that turn challenges into opportunities. At its heart, this project is about people; about enabling families, communities, and nations to thrive with the stability that clean power brings."
The construction phase involved over 350,000 safe work-hours and included the installation of more than 81,000 solar panels and 158 inverters. This development will serve as a blueprint for future renewable energy initiatives within Chad.
GSU will manage the plant, which signifies a transformative step for Chad by providing dependable large-scale clean electricity. This move aims to meet increasing electricity demands while reducing dependence on imported diesel fuel. The project underscores GSU’s dedication to expanding its portfolio of clean energy investments across Africa.
The UAE's involvement through GSU highlights its commitment to climate-friendly growth and fostering practical economic partnerships with countries in the Global South. The Noor Chad plant not only enhances local energy infrastructure but also aligns with broader environmental goals.
This solar facility stands as a model for future projects aimed at sustainable development in Chad. By delivering reliable clean power, it supports both community well-being and national progress towards renewable energy adoption.
