UAE And EU Enhance Cooperation On Energy, Climate, And Water Resilience Before COP30

Abdulla Ahmed Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, recently concluded a two-day visit to the European Union (EU) in Brussels. This visit, from 6-7 March, involved discussions with senior officials and stakeholders in the energy and water sectors. The meetings aimed to strengthen the UAE's partnership with the EU, focusing on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and water resilience.

Balalaa's trip followed his participation in the 2026 United Nations Water Conference (UNWC26) Organisational Session in New York. It also coincided with EU Ocean Days in Brussels. During his visit, he was invited to engage in the EU’s consultative process for reviewing its water resilience strategy. This involvement underscores the UAE's commitment to global sustainability efforts.

UAE-EU Cooperation on Energy and Water

During these discussions, Balalaa emphasised the launch of the 2026 UNWC process and outlined the UAE’s priorities for this conference. He invited international partners to collaborate on innovative solutions to water challenges. His engagement highlighted the UAE’s dedication to climate action, energy transition, and enhancing global sustainability.

The meetings also served as a platform to reinforce commitments made at COP28 in Dubai in 2023. These commitments focus on climate adaptation and energy-related goals. The discussions aimed to ensure alignment with EU strategies ahead of significant upcoming events like the UN Ocean Conference 2025, COP30, and the 2026 UN Water Conference.

Balalaa met with several key figures from the European Commission during his visit. These included Ditte Juul-Jørgensen, Director-General for Energy; Florika Fink-Hooijer, Director-General of Environment; Kurt Vandenberghe, Director-General Climate Action; and Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Representatives from the European External Action Service (EEAS) were also present.

The discussions focused on advancing joint efforts in water sustainability leading up to 2026 UNWC. Broader climate adaptation strategies were also discussed alongside mitigating climate change impacts. Enhancing cooperation before the UN Ocean Conference 2025 in France was another key topic.

Exploring Investment Opportunities

The visit included engagements with officials from the European Investment Bank (EIB). These meetings aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations by exploring potential investments in clean energy, infrastructure, and water sustainability projects. Such collaborations are crucial for expanding sustainable initiatives between the UAE and EU.

Balalaa reiterated that these dialogues were instrumental in driving forward commitments related to climate adaptation and energy transition made at COP28. Ensuring strong alignment with EU strategies is vital as both parties prepare for future global conferences focused on sustainability challenges.

This visit underscores a shared commitment between the UAE and EU towards addressing pressing environmental issues through collaborative efforts. By fostering partnerships across various sectors such as renewable energy and water resilience, both regions aim to contribute significantly towards achieving global sustainability goals.
