UAE, Ethiopia, African Union And IGAD Convene Humanitarian Conference For Sudan's Crisis

The United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, the African Union, and IGAD convened a significant humanitarian conference in Addis Ababa on 14 February 2025. The event aimed to address Sudan's dire humanitarian crisis. Key figures like Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, Ethiopia's Prime Minister, and António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, participated alongside regional leaders and international organisations.

The conference sought to rally global support for Sudan and called for a ceasefire during Ramadan. Many nations backed the UAE's appeal for peace. Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan of the UAE emphasised the importance of this gathering as a catalyst for future efforts to aid Sudan. He urged warring factions to respect Ramadan by allowing humanitarian aid to reach those in need.

Sheikh Shakhboot highlighted that no entity should block lifesaving assistance. He stressed the UAE's leading role in providing aid to Sudan, contributing an additional $200 million recently. This brings their total aid since the conflict began to $600.4 million. Over ten years, the UAE has given $3.5 billion in aid to Sudan.

Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali expressed Ethiopia's solidarity with Sudan as a neighbouring nation sharing cultural ties and struggles. He noted Ethiopia's support over six years through peace efforts and economic contributions like electricity supply via a dedicated line.

Moussa Faki Mahamat from the African Union criticised Sudan's ongoing conflict as a leadership failure. He urged all parties involved to embrace an immediate ceasefire for peace and justice in Sudan. This would enable political dialogue addressing conflict roots and restoring constitutional order.

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu of IGAD stressed the urgency of coordinated actions beyond pledges to alleviate suffering in Sudan. He highlighted the responsibility history places on leaders to act decisively for long-term recovery in Sudan.

The conference underscored regional commitment to aiding Sudan amidst its crisis, with calls for immediate action resonating among attendees. The focus remains on ensuring humanitarian access and fostering conditions conducive to peace and development in Sudan.
