'Foresight-1' Elevates UAE Into Top SAR Satellite Operators Globally
Bayanat, a subsidiary of G42 and a leader in AI-powered geospatial solutions, has announced the successful launch of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite named "Foresight-1". This milestone marks a significant achievement for the UAE’s Earth Observation Space Programme. Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, highlighted that this development places the UAE among the elite group of 20 countries with operational SAR space assets.
Al Hosani explained that Bayanat and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) have devised a strategic roadmap to deploy a constellation of SAR satellites. Since the announcement of the Earth Observation Space Programme in 2023, both companies have been executing their strategic plan, beginning with Foresight-1. He noted that this satellite will enable rapid and repeated monitoring over the Middle East region.

The Foresight-1 satellite offers continuous high-resolution monitoring using SAR technology. Unlike traditional optical imaging satellites, SAR satellites can capture images regardless of weather conditions or sunlight reflection. This capability ensures day or night imaging, enhancing geospatial solutions and services provided by Bayanat and Yahsat.
Al Hosani emphasized that SAR technology significantly improves disaster management, marine monitoring, and smart mobility applications. The active sensing system illuminates the Earth's surface and measures reflected signals to produce high-resolution images. This advancement is crucial for various sectors requiring precise geospatial data.
Emirati citizens make up more than 30 percent of the Earth Observation Space Programme's workforce. This reflects a commitment to developing highly qualified national cadres in vital sectors. The involvement of local talent underscores the programme's dedication to nurturing expertise within the UAE.
Merger and Formation of Space42
Regarding the anticipated merger between Bayanat and Yahsat, Al Hosani expects it to be finalized by year-end, pending regulatory approvals from UAE and international authorities. He stated that this merger would establish "Space42" as a leading Emirati company in the global space sector. This move aligns with the National Space Strategy 2030 goals.
Al Hosani reiterated that Space42 aims to support national security, foster innovation, encourage international cooperation, drive economic growth, and enhance urban development through space technology. The merger is seen as a step towards achieving these objectives under the National Space Strategy 2030 framework.
The successful launch of Foresight-1 not only strengthens the UAE's position in the space sector but also supports its growing capabilities in geospatial solutions. The continuous efforts by Bayanat and Yahsat demonstrate their commitment to advancing space technology for various applications critical to national development.
