UAE To Host Electric Vehicle Grand Prix For High School Teams In March

The UAE is gearing up for the second edition of the UAE Electric Vehicle Grand Prix (UAE EVGP), a notable event that underscores the nation's commitment to fostering innovation and education in the fields of science and technology. Scheduled for 2nd March at Al Forsan International Sports Resort in Abu Dhabi, this competition is set to attract more than 400 high school students. Participants hail from 21 UAE schools, alongside international teams from the United States, Egypt, and Italy.

Organized by Global EEE, a US-based non-profit focused on education, energy, and the environment, in collaboration with the UAE's 3elm Education and Training Consultancy, the event aims to align talent development with labour market needs. NYU Abu Dhabi plays a crucial role as the academic partner, providing a platform for students to apply engineering principles in building and racing single-person electric cars.

The challenge not only tests the efficiency of these custom-built electric vehicles but also encourages students to apply their classroom knowledge to solve real-world problems. With guidance from teachers and technical experts, participants have prepared for the race through an orientation session and a mini-conference held at NYU Abu Dhabi’s campus.

The UAE EVGP serves as an engaging platform for students to explore concepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in a practical setting. It promotes the development of soft skills such as teamwork, leadership, and innovation. The competition will see teams navigating the Al Forsan closed karting track, aiming to complete the most laps with limited battery capacity.

Awards up for grabs include trophies for the top three teams based on laps completed, alongside recognitions for the fastest qualifying time, technical innovation, and contributions to women in science and engineering (WISE). The ProjoTech award is another highlight of the event. A panel of judges from the private sector, academia, and government will evaluate the participants. This panel includes representatives from the US Department of Transportation and the Washington DC Department of Energy and Environment.

Key partnerships have made this year's UAE EVGP possible, including support from the US Mission in the UAE, ProjoTech, Al Forsan International Sports Resort, and PepsiCo. Mariët Westermann, Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, highlighted the importance of such initiatives in nurturing young minds and fostering sustainable innovation among high school students. She emphasized that this hands-on learning experience is vital for developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a curiosity for sustainable solutions.

The UAE EVGP exemplifies how collaborative efforts between educational institutions and industry partners can create meaningful opportunities for students to engage with STEM subjects actively. As these young innovators take to the track, they not only compete for awards but also lay down a marker for future sustainable solutions.
