UAE Elected As Vice President Of UNESCO’s 43rd General Conference In Samarkand
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been chosen as Vice President for the 43rd session of UNESCO's General Conference. This event is taking place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 30th October to 13th November 2025. Representatives from 194 member states are participating. Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture and Chair of the UAE National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, is leading the UAE delegation.
During the conference, UNESCO announced that the late Emirati poet Ahmed Bin Sulayem and the United Arab Emirates University will be part of its 2026-2027 Anniversary Programme. This programme honours individuals and institutions that have significantly impacted culture, education, science, and peace globally. The inclusion highlights Ahmed Bin Sulayem's influential literary legacy in shaping regional culture.
Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi expressed the UAE's dedication to advancing UNESCO’s mission by investing in knowledge and cultural understanding. He announced the UAE’s candidacy for membership on UNESCO’s Executive Board for 2027 to 2031 during the General Policy Debate. He stated, "In the UAE, we are committed to building peace through education, science, and culture."
The UAE's role as a trusted partner in cultural diplomacy was underscored by its election as Vice President of UNESCO’s General Conference. The nation also serves as Chair of the Arab Group of UNESCO. The conference highlighted the UAE’s growing contributions to culture, heritage, and education sectors.
Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi emphasised international cooperation in protecting cultural heritage. He referenced the UAE’s partnership with UNESCO in initiatives like "Revive the Spirit of Mosul" as a model for future post-conflict efforts. The UAE welcomes collaboration with Member States to advance cultural restoration where it is at risk.
UNESCO approved including Ahmed Bin Sulayem and United Arab Emirates University in its Anniversaries Programme. These commemorations mark significant milestones: 50 years since Ahmed Bin Sulayem's passing and since founding the university in 1976. This recognition celebrates their contributions to literature and higher education.
Celebrating Literary Contributions
The late poet Ahmed Bin Sulayem is celebrated for his impact on classical and Nabati poetry. His works authentically document Emirati society's identity and values during the early 20th century. Meanwhile, UNESCO’s recognition of United Arab Emirates University acknowledges its pioneering role in advancing higher education in both the UAE and regionally.
In addition to these recognitions, UNESCO celebrated Sultan bin Ali Al Owais' centenary birth anniversary in 2025. These inclusions highlight the UAE’s growing presence on the global cultural stage while reaffirming its commitment to preserving intellectual contributions aligned with UNESCO’s mission.
The conference showcased how deeply involved the UAE is in promoting culture through education and science. By investing in these areas, they aim to build a brighter future while maintaining their rich heritage.
